FileDrop Help

Quick-start guide to sharing files across your devices.

Getting started

FileDrop lets you share files between your browser and your Windows desktop. Files are stored in the cloud and synced in real time to every device you connect.

  1. On the landing page, choose Sign in with OneTimeLogin. Browser sign-in is handled entirely by the OneTimeLogin single sign-on service.
  2. After you authenticate, you are returned to your Dashboard.
  3. Create or select a space, then start uploading.

Spaces

A space is a shared folder that groups your files — think of it as a project or workspace. Every device you pair joins a space.

  • Create a space: when no space is selected, click Create a Space, give it a name (and an optional description), and it is auto-selected.
  • Switch spaces: use the space selector at the top-left of the Dashboard toolbar. It shows the file count for each space.
  • Organize with folders: use New Folder to nest files. The breadcrumb above the file list lets you jump back to any parent folder.

Uploading files & folders

There are two ways to add files to the current space and folder:

  • Button upload: click Upload in the toolbar and pick one or more files. A progress bar tracks each file through PreparingUploadingConfirmingDone.
  • Drag & drop: drag files straight from your file manager onto the Dashboard. A dashed overlay reading Drop files or folders to upload appears — release to upload.
  • Folders: drag an entire folder onto the page and its structure is recreated in your space. Dropping directly onto a folder row uploads into that folder.

Files are transferred directly to cloud storage, so they never pass through the server. Large folder drops are queued in batches.

Pairing a device

Pairing connects another browser or phone to a space you already have open.

On the device that already has the space:

  1. Click Pair Device in the Dashboard toolbar.
  2. On the Generate Code tab, click Generate Pairing Code.
  3. A 6-digit code and a QR code appear, valid for 5 minutes.

On the new device:

  1. Open the Pair page and choose the Join with Code tab.
  2. Enter the 6-digit code (digits auto-advance; you can paste all six at once) or scan the QR code.
  3. Confirm the auto-detected device name and click Join Space.

Linking the desktop app

The Windows desktop app runs in the system tray and keeps a local folder in sync with a space — like a shared drive. You link it using a one-time device code generated in your browser.

  1. Sign in on the web with OneTimeLogin and open the space you want the desktop app to sync.
  2. Click Pair Device and Generate Pairing Code to produce a 6-digit code.
  3. Launch the FileDrop desktop app. In its Link Device window, enter the 6-digit code.
  4. The app claims the code, links itself to that space, and begins syncing files to your local FileDrop folder.

You only sign in through the browser. The desktop app never asks for your password — it is authorized entirely by the code you enter.

Troubleshooting

  • Pairing code doesn't work: codes expire after 5 minutes. Generate a fresh one and try again.
  • Files not appearing on another device: real-time sync uses a live connection that reconnects automatically after a network hiccup. Give it a moment, or refresh the page.
  • Upload stuck on "Preparing": this usually means cloud storage is temporarily unreachable. Wait and retry the upload.
  • Desktop app shows a red tray icon: the app can't reach the server or its link expired. Quit and relaunch; if it asks, generate a new device code and link again.
  • Can't sign in: browser sign-in is SSO-only through OneTimeLogin. Use Sign in with OneTimeLogin from the landing page.
